Founder Padmabhushan Dr. M.C. Modi (1916 – 2005)
Born on 4th October, 1916 Dr. M.C. MODI went on to niche himself a place in the history of human service with unsurpassed selfless, yeoman service to the human society at large.
In the field of ophthalmic treatment he was recognized as ‘BRINGING SIGHT & LIGHT TO THE BLIND IN INDIA’
Dr. M. C. Modi revolutionized the eye care treatment in a novel and highly effective method. In his lifetime he performed more than 7 lakhs eye operations - a leader and a champion in the field of eye surgery in the world. No other fingers in the world have performed so many operations. He has examined 70 lakhs and above eye patients.
Started intensive free Relief Service since 1943 Dr M.C. Modi went to people to provide the eye care through this traveling eye hospital and was on the move throughout the year. He was the Pioneer inr in conducting free eye operation camps, piloting traveling free eye hospital and operation camps, in India.
He is referred as ‘Netra Dhani’ (light giver) – ‘our brother who gives the eye sight’ by the people of India.
Performed 833 eye operation (Cataract) in a single day and the feat has featured in the “Guinness book of world records”.
Dedicated a free eye hospital with all the sophisticated equipments and the traveling eye hospital as a trust to carry on his work for long years.
This is followed by many other eye hospitals and in other countries as a pilot project.
Million in USA had the opportunity to witness the telecast of Eye Relief service.
Traveled extensively to USA and Russia to demonstrate his skills and to up date himself in the field of ophthalmology
Many recognitions, honors, awards followed him from India and abroad.
In USA, he was described as, A Great Architect in Eye Surgery, One of the Eminent eye surgeons in the world, Pioneer in mass eye surgery,
Russians remarked; Wizard of surgical knife,
King of eye operation
Dr G. Sjcault of United Nations proclaimed,
Dr Modi has won the leadership of eye surgery in this world
Helen Keller a Social worker of reputation described the service of Dr Modi as ‘A light piercing the darkness in selfless services’
The Mayor of Spartanburg, USA conferred honorary Citizenship to Dr M.C. Modi.
Universities of Mysore, Karnataka and Poona conferred him with honorary degrees.
Bestowed upon with many decorations by the state and central governments and civic address, Dr M.C, Modi was conferred Service Award by the then Government of Mysore and was decorated by the Governor of Mysore
